HMM Advances Digitalization with DCSA Pilot Success
HMM has recorded notable progress in its digitalization strategy by successfully completing three pilot projects aligned with the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), which sets digital standards in global container shipping. These pilots, conducted simultaneously with Genesis, Samsung SDS, and HelloContainer, demonstrated the speed, accuracy, and operational efficiency delivered by standard API-based data sharing in both Booking and Bill of Lading processes.
This initiative marked HMM's first effort to test DCSA standards with multiple ecosystem partners in a live operating environment. DCSA provided direct support in technical onboarding, integration facilitation, and stakeholder alignment, contributing to the seamless progress of the pilots.
DCSA-compliant APIs accelerate standardization
HMM Digital Senior Manager John Kim noted that the DCSA Conformance system delivers significant value in testing the accuracy of APIs developed by carriers. According to Kim:
"Conformance testing is just the beginning; real progress comes when parties implementing the same standard work together by running pilots."
HMM believes that the completion of the three pilots established a solid foundation for transitioning to standard API usage in real operations and created important momentum in the company's digital transformation.
Pilot 1: DCSA Booking standard with Genesis
The pilot conducted in collaboration with Genesis evaluated how Booking Confirmation processes could be shared between systems more quickly and completely.
Pilot achievements:
Supporting traditional EDIFACT-based processes with modern APIs,
Eliminating errors dependent on Excel, email, and manual entry,
Accelerating current information flow,
Reducing operational workload,
Providing important feedback to enhance DCSA guidance.
This work delivered notable improvement in existing systems where manual approval cycles frequently caused delays and costly downstream errors.
Pilot 2 and 3: Samsung SDS, HelloContainer, and FrieslandCampina collaboration
The pilots conducted with Samsung SDS and shipper FrieslandCampina via HelloContainer tested how Booking and Bill of Lading standards perform across a broader supply chain.
Objectives:
Replacing fragmented EDI + email traffic with a standard API model,
Improving data quality between systems,
Eliminating inconsistencies in critical notifications such as ETA,
Reducing the need for repetitive custom integrations.
HelloContainer currently uses the DCSA Track & Trace standard and plans to bring Booking and Bill of Lading APIs live by the end of 2025.
DCSA: "This is the beginning of scalable digital collaboration"
DCSA Chief Growth Officer Mariana Bock-Losada explained the significance of the pilots for the sector:
"When a carrier implements DCSA-compliant APIs, it can connect directly with any party using the same standards. No custom integration is required. True scalability becomes possible this way."
This assessment underscores how API standardization provides a digital infrastructure compatible with the entire ecosystem at once rather than multiple custom integrations in the shipping industry.
Key Takeaways:
HMM successfully completed three DCSA pilots with Genesis, Samsung SDS, and HelloContainer.
Booking and Bill of Lading APIs were tested in live environments, increasing accuracy, visibility, and speed.
EDIFACT + manual processes are being replaced by modern, standard APIs.
The pilots demonstrated that DCSA compliance is scalable in real operations.
HelloContainer will go live with Booking and BL standards by end of 2025.
Standardization is making carrier–shipper–platform integrations faster, cheaper, and more reliable.
