HMM Surpasses 1 Million TEU Capacity, Joins Exclusive "TEU Millionaires Club"
HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine) has reached a major milestone in global container shipping history. The company has achieved a fleet capacity of 1,007,180 TEU according to Alphaliner data, making it the eighth shipping company to join the exclusive group known as the "TEU Millionaires Club."
This achievement reflects impressive growth demonstrated by South Korea's national carrier HMM over the past five years. According to Alphaliner's weekly report, HMM's operating capacity has doubled since 2019. The analysis highlights that the 2020s have been the most profitable period in container shipping history to date, and HMM has benefited substantially from this trend.
Fleet size and new ship orders
HMM's fleet has now officially surpassed the 1 million TEU threshold, formally joining the "mega carriers" league in the shipping industry. The company is expected to maintain this growth momentum as numerous new vessels under construction at South Korean shipyards will be delivered from 2026 onward.
According to the plan:
Five new vessels in the 8,500–9,000 TEU class will be delivered during 2026,
Twelve new vessels with 13,000 TEU capacity will join the fleet before the end of the decade.
These new builds will strengthen HMM's operational capacity and increase fleet efficiency. Additionally, the company plans to accelerate its transition to sustainable shipping by investing in next-generation container vessels equipped with carbon-neutral ship technologies and alternative fuel systems.
Strategic investment plan
HMM had allocated 23.5 trillion South Korean won (approximately $17.5 billion) as an investment budget under its 2030 strategic expansion plan announced in September 2024. In line with this plan:
The container fleet will nearly double,
The tanker and dry bulk fleet will triple in size.
The company aims to further strengthen South Korea's global position in maritime shipping by 2030 and expand its market share on Asia–Europe and transpacific routes.
Global ranking position
HMM currently ranks eighth in Alphaliner's global carrier rankings. Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine, positioned just above HMM, is preparing to cross the 2 million TEU threshold shortly. Japan-based Ocean Network Express (ONE) recently celebrated this milestone.
At the top of the rankings stands Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), led by Soren Toft. MSC is preparing to break another record by surpassing 7 million TEU capacity in the coming months.
HMM's rise demonstrates that South Korea is regaining global strength in maritime shipping. According to experts, strategic coordination between the country's government and private sector, infrastructure investments, and cutting-edge shipyards are among the main drivers of this growth.
A new era in container shipping
HMM's success does not merely signify capacity expansion; it is also regarded as an important signal for the re-establishment of stability in global supply chains. Rising freight rates in the post-pandemic period, supply chain disruptions, and rising energy costs have driven maritime shipping companies toward efficiency-focused strategies.
