Russian Railways (RZD) has announced the successful completion of the first grain shipment following the resumption of transit transportation to Armenia via Azerbaijan, a route that has remained closed since the 1990s. According to the announcement, 1,050 tons of wheat was loaded into 15 hopper cars at the Dimitrovgrad station in Russia's Ulyanovsk region, then transported via Azerbaijan and subsequently through the Georgian route to reach Armenia. This shipment represents the de facto reopening of a trade corridor that has remained closed for years on the Russia–Azerbaijan–Georgia–Armenia line.
Route closed in the 1990s reopened
Transit transportation between Russia and Armenia was suspended in the early 1990s due to regional conflicts following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Political tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia, in particular, led to the closure of transport corridors.
