CLdN Orders 10 New LoLo Container Ships: Fleet Expansion

Multimodal logistics provider CLdN has placed an order for 10 new lift-on/lift-off (LoLo) container ships to expand its maritime transport fleet. Each vessel will have a cargo capacity of 1,100 TEU and will join the company's existing fleet of approximately 30 RoRo ships. This move is seen as part of CLdN's strategy to strengthen its presence in the European maritime transport sector and expand its service portfolio.

The new LoLo vessels have been designed for fuel efficiency and will feature an open hatch design. The open hatch design enables the ships to carry larger and more voluminous cargo while facilitating faster loading and unloading operations at ports. This reduces handling times, increases operational efficiency, and enables faster service delivery to customers.

In March, CLdN launched LoLo services using chartered vessels operated from Distriport, a newly acquired terminal in Rotterdam. This initiative represents the company's first step into the LoLo segment and complements its existing RoRo services. The company noted that expansion into the LoLo segment provides operational flexibility, offers fast turnaround times at ports, and creates optimal frequency for customers.

CLdN emphasized that this new service is unique in the current short-sea container market. The market is currently dominated by deep-sea feeder carriers offering longer delivery times and less frequent services. CLdN's product with shorter delivery times and high frequency offers significant advantages to customers in supply chain management and helps them gain a competitive position in the market.

The company's CEO Florent Maes stated, "Our latest entry into the LoLo segment, facilitated by the acquisition of the Distriport terminal in Rotterdam earlier this year, has been very well received by customers and greatly complements our RoRo services." This statement demonstrates that the company's strategic expansion plans are aligned with customer needs and that it is taking innovative steps in the sector.

Construction of the new ships will be carried out by HD Hyundai Mipo in Ulsan, South Korea, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January 2027. This investment demonstrates that CLdN will strengthen its fleet with modern, environmentally friendly, and efficient vessels. Fuel-efficient ships will contribute to the company's environmental sustainability goals while reducing operating costs.

In conclusion, CLdN's significant investment in the LoLo segment aims to strengthen the company's leadership in the maritime transport sector and provide customers with broader, more flexible, and efficient services. This expansion, expected to have positive impacts in both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability, could also increase competition in the sector.
