Greek shipowner JHI Steamship has expanded its growing newbuilding programme with an LR2 tanker order at Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding. The Athens-based company has contracted a 115,000 dwt scrubber-fitted unit at Imabari's Marugame yard for delivery in 2028. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

The latest contract adds to a steadily growing orderbook assembled by JHI Steamship since the company emerged following the restructuring of the Inglessis family's shipping interests. The company already has three aframax/LR2 tankers under construction at South Korea's K Shipbuilding, with deliveries running through 2028. JHI has also booked two suezmax tankers at HD Hyundai Samho and one VLCC at Hanwha Ocean for delivery by 2029.

The Inglessis family reshaped its shipping interests following the split of the long-established Samos Steamship business. JHI Steamship is now controlled by John Inglessis, while cousin Anthony heads Carlova Maritime, which is also active in newbuildings. Both entities continue aggressive fleet expansion strategies in the global tanker market.
