Russian Railways transported 3.3 million tons of grain in March 2026, marking a 57.8% increase year-on-year. The company announced on its messenger channel that containerized grain shipments also rose 30.4% to 186,000 tons (12,500 TEU).

Of the total volume, 2.4 million tons were export-designated, representing a 2.3-fold surge compared to the previous year. 1.6 million tons of export cargo were delivered to ports, doubling the prior year's figure. The largest share of shipments, 1.5 million tons, was transported to Russia's southern ports, reflecting a 2.2-fold increase.

Northwest ports received 97,000 tons of grain (up 2-fold), while Far East ports handled 51,000 tons, down 26.6%. Additionally, 828,000 tons of grain crossed land border checkpoints, surging 2.9-fold. For the January-March 2026 period, Russian Railways loaded a total of 9.2 million tons of grain, up 46.5% year-on-year.

Russia's grain export infrastructure plays a pivotal role in global supply chains. Black Sea ports, particularly Novorossiysk and facilities in the Krasnodar region, serve as primary distribution hubs for this growth. Rail freight's flexibility offers supply chain operators alternative routes to bypass port capacity bottlenecks.

Industry analysts attribute the strong performance to Russian Railways' long block train initiatives and investments in container logistics. The robust March data underscores grain logistics as a growth driver in Russia's economy during the first quarter of 2026.
