New Global Container Ports Index (LCP - Leading Container Ports)
New Global Container Ports Index (LCP - Leading Container Ports)
DNV and Menon Economics have introduced a new index alongside their long-running Leading Maritime Cities index, this time ranking the world's leading container ports: the Leading Container Ports of the World (LCP).
According to the initial results:
1. Singapore
2. Shanghai
3. Ningbo-Zhoushan
4. Rotterdam
5. Busan
The LCP evaluates a total of 160 ports across 35 objective indicators including efficiency, connectivity, sustainability, alternative fuel infrastructure, capacity expansion, and customer value.
Dr. Erik Jakobsen from Menon Economics noted that "the most successful ports both expand capacity and integrate automation and digitalization at every point of operation," emphasizing that investments in clean energy and integrated hinterland connections notably enhance performance.
The report also identified regional leaders:
North America: New York & New Jersey
Europe: Hamburg
Africa: Tanger Med
Middle East: Jebel Ali
Oceania: Sydney
The new LCP index will compete with the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), currently published by the World Bank and S&P Global. Shanghai ranked first in the CPPI's latest report, while Singapore failed to crack the top 10. The new LCP methodology places greater emphasis on ports' broader impact and transformational capacity.
