DNV and Menon Economics have released the inaugural Leading Container Ports of the World (LCP) report, positioning Singapore as the world's leading container port. The new index evaluates modern container ports across five core pillars by integrating multidimensional criteria including the scale of global maritime trade flows, port capacity, digitalization, environmental performance, and infrastructure quality.

In the report's overall rankings, Shanghai ranks second and Ningbo-Zhoushan third. Rotterdam and Busan round out the top five. According to the study, maritime shipping carries approximately 90% of global trade volume, while container ports process more than 80% of non-bulk trade, underscoring their critical role.

The report examines port transformation across three main dynamics: rising trade volumes, technological advances, and sustainability pressures aligned with climate objectives. These factors are reshaping the long-term competitiveness of container ports.

The analysis evaluated 160 ports and examined performance across 35 indicators. These indicators are grouped into five pillars covering infrastructure, operations, connectivity, governance, and sustainability stages. Indicators include metrics such as throughput volumes, berth productivity, emissions per TEU, and alternative fuel availability. The evaluation also incorporates expert insights from industry stakeholders. The report is noted as complementary to the long-running Leading Maritime Cities of the World index.

DNV Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen stated that container ports handle more than 930 million TEU annually and must make strategic investments to scale to this magnitude. The report presents four core recommendations for port operators: scalable infrastructure, accelerated digitalization, sustainability measures, and strong customer relationships. Port authorities are noted as playing a central role in the transformation, with many ports directing new investments toward closing performance gaps.

Menon Economics Partner Dr. Erik Jakobsen observed that top-ranking ports differentiate themselves through capacity expansion, automation, digital tools, integrated transport connectivity, and clean energy solutions.

Singapore's leadership in the report is attributed to its strong performance across all five pillars. The city's position reflects infrastructure, governance, connectivity, automation, and early alternative-fuel investments as critical factors. Shanghai's strong ranking is explained by its 2024 throughput of 51.5 million TEU, advanced network connectivity, and sustainability initiatives. Ningbo-Zhoushan stands out as a rapidly expanding logistics hub under China's Belt and Road Initiative; the port handled 39.3 million TEU in 2024 and demonstrated 26% growth over three years.

Regional leaders include New York & New Jersey, Hamburg, Tanger Med, Jebel Ali, and Sydney. These ports demonstrate strong performance in connectivity, modernization, and multimodal transport integration within their respective geographies.
