Manufacturers Struggle with IT Skills Gap and Cybersecurity Challenges

According to a report titled "The State of Network Security in Manufacturing," conducted by GatePoint Research and supported by Aryaka, the manufacturing sector is grappling with critical network security issues including escalating cyber threats, visibility gaps, and insufficient resources. The report identifies the industry's priorities as real-time network visibility, secure global connectivity, and cost control.

Of the senior manufacturing leaders surveyed, 68% stated that IT teams are experiencing understaffing or lack of training, while 64% identified enhanced network visibility as their top priority. Additionally, 54% emphasized that secure connectivity for remote working teams is an urgent necessity. Half of the respondents considered simplified network management and cost reduction as critical.

Ken Rutsky, Chief Marketing Officer at Aryaka, noted that "manufacturers today are trying to balance rapid digital transformation with the demand to secure distributed network infrastructure," highlighting the key areas where survey respondents are seeking support. These areas include gaining network visibility, improving resource efficiency, and simplifying operations.

The report points out that the challenges in managing networks spanning multiple facilities across North America, Europe, and other regions have underscored the importance of unified network and security solutions. Aryaka's Unified SASE as a Service solution is being used as an effective tool by manufacturers such as Lauridsen Group International (LGI), a global leader in animal-derived products. Reid Kreimeyer, IT Infrastructure Sr. Manager at LGI, stated: "We're excited about securing user access on company machines and consistently filtering network and security traffic."

The report also addresses cybersecurity challenges in the digital supply chain and the most critical supply chain risks to monitor in 2025, along with strategies for mitigating them. These findings offer important insights into how manufacturers need to streamline their operations to address IT skills gaps and cyber security threats they face during their digital transformation journey.
