Trump Suspends Mexico Tariffs Until April 2

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on March 6, 2025, that he has suspended the 25% tariffs on products imported from Mexico and covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April 2. The decision came following a telephone conversation between Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump indicated that he and Sheinbaum had reached strong agreement on border security and preventing fentanyl trafficking. He also noted that they agreed Mexico would not pay tariffs on any products covered under USMCA, with this arrangement remaining in effect until April 2.

Sheinbaum characterized her conversation with Trump as "excellent and respectful," stating that her government would continue working on security and migration matters. She also noted that most of Mexico's imports to the U.S. comply with the trade agreement.

These developments occurred shortly after Trump implemented his decision on March 4 to impose 25% tariffs on products imported from Mexico and Canada. Trump had begun applying these tariffs citing high levels of drug shipments entering the U.S. from Mexico and Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau characterized Trump's decision as "unjust," announcing that Canada would retaliate by imposing 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods. Trudeau noted that the amount of fentanyl seized through joint U.S.-Canada efforts declined by 97% between December 2024 and January 2025.

Trump's decision to suspend tariffs is viewed as an important step in providing economic stability, particularly for automakers and companies operating under the USMCA framework. However, new tariff schedules set to take effect on April 2 are expected to have broader implications for international trade.
