Saudi Arabia Launches First Container Rail Transport

Saudi Arabia's Ports Authority (MAWANI) announced the successful completion of the first container shipment by rail from Jubail Commercial Port to Riyadh Dry Port. This historic shipment transported 78 containers, utilizing the connection between Jubail Commercial Port and the Eastern Railway network. The railway has a maximum cargo capacity of 140 TEU per trip.

MAWANI collaborated on this project with the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (GAZT), Saudi Railways (SAR), and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The aim of this collaboration is to establish rail connections between ports and to promote seamless transportation of containers, bulk materials, and general cargo.

The SAR network is reported to provide connections between Riyadh Dry Port and various ports including King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, King Fahd Industrial Port in Jubail, Jubail Commercial Port, and Ras Al-Khair Port.

Additionally, MAWANI signed a partnership agreement with Saudi Railways in early April to establish a unified framework for rail freight transport operations from its ports and to adopt a general organizational and legal model.

According to MAWANI's statement, "Operating the railway line strengthens the connection between maritime and rail transport modes and increases the efficiency of logistics operations. This initiative will provide logistics support to industrial and commercial ports, enhance their competitiveness, and offer safe and sustainable solutions that will support trade movements, reduce harmful emissions, and contribute to environmental protection."
