Turkey's First Private Intermodal Terminal Railport Commences Operations

Sedat Onat
Railport's launch of its first train under METRANS operations marks the terminal's opening, with a detailed overview of its capacity, infrastructure, intermodal advantages, and impact on Turkey–Europe freight transportation.

Railport, Turkey's first private intermodal terminal, formally commenced operations on November 21 with the departure of the inaugural train operated by METRANS. Developed through a partnership between Arkas Holding and Germany-based duisport, the terminal was designed to respond to growing intermodal transportation demand between Turkey and Europe. The new facility is being regarded as a significant milestone that will expand railway-based logistics capacity in the country.

Railport defines its founding vision as "making railway transportation in Turkey safer, more frequent, and more efficient." The terminal's modern infrastructure, high handling capacity, and advanced digital operational systems are aimed at making freight flows more predictable and competitive, particularly on the Turkey–Europe corridor.

\n

\n

Upon completion of the final investment phase, the terminal will handle annually:

\n
    \n
  • 360,000 TEU containers,

  • \n
  • 1.5 million tons of general cargo,

  • \n
  • 122,000 CEU finished vehicles,

  • \n
  • 125,000 trailers.

  • \n
\n

\n

This scale marks an unprecedented level for intermodal infrastructure development in Turkey. Terminal management emphasizes that high capacity means not only physical scale, but also operational speed, reduced handling costs, and secure transportation.

\n

Railport Director Fatih Yılmazkarasu offered the following assessment regarding the inaugural train's departure:

\n

\n"The departure of the first train is a tangible demonstration of the value Railport will bring to Turkey's railway transportation sector. This is the first step in our long-term strategy. Our goal is to make intermodal transportation more effective across the country and provide our customers with competitive solutions."

\n

\n

The terminal's location provides strategic advantage through its proximity to production and export centers in the Marmara Region. Given Turkey's rising production in automotive, electronics, household appliances, and chemicals sectors, Railport is expected to become a major logistics hub for integrated export-oriented freight transportation to Europe.

\n

\n

The element strengthening the project's international dimension is the duisport collaboration. Operating Europe's largest inland port in Duisburg, Germany, duisport closely follows Turkey's growing supply chain ecosystem. While the company recognizes Turkey's role as a "bridge between East and West," it noted that sectoral dynamics—including the region's chemical industry, export-oriented electronics manufacturing, and BYD's automotive factory under construction—were more decisive factors in the investment decision.

\n

\n

Railport's commencement of operations provides Turkey with the long-awaited quality capacity in terms of intermodal mode transfer points. METRANS's operation of the inaugural train is interpreted as a signal that the terminal will soon integrate into high-frequency block train connections with Europe. This will enable Turkish shipments to reach critical European centers such as Czechia, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland more rapidly and reliably.

\n

\n

Railport's commissioning marks the beginning of a new era strengthening railway transportation in Turkey's logistics backbone. The terminal will reduce road congestion and contribute to emission targets while creating a lower-cost and more sustainable supply chain model for exporters.
