PITT OHIO Achieves $11 Million in Savings Through AI-Powered System
Pennsylvania-based PITT OHIO has provided less-than-truckload (LTL), warehousing, and full truckload transportation services for more than 40 years. To make its trucking and delivery operations more efficient, the company replaced its legacy systems with an AI-powered enterprise platform. Since the initial launch of this new platform, the company has reported savings exceeding $11 million.
During the development process of its new system, PITT OHIO aimed to build a data-driven and reliable structure. The system needed to have comprehensive capabilities encompassing dispatching, pickup and delivery information, and the ability to manage all of the company's drivers across the United States. Key requirements for the new platform included automating manual processes, increasing operational efficiency, improving driver productivity and mobility, enabling rapid and accurate information flow between systems, adopting digital processes, providing a user-friendly interface, increasing business volume, improving customer service, maintaining security and compliance standards, recruiting and training high-performing drivers, and modernizing operations with a cloud-based, fast, secure, and reliable system.
The company partnered with Maven, an AI software developer, on this project. Maven, based in Pennsylvania, specializes in AI software that supports reporting dashboards for trucking operations, optimizes dispatch routes, and provides easy access to driver and customer data. Stakeholders from both companies came together to test Maven's new platform for PITT OHIO, train employees, and provide feedback and support throughout a closely monitored launch process. During this process, Maven integrated more than 2,600 of PITT OHIO's employees—including truck drivers, dispatchers, safety managers, and operations managers—into the new system. The new platform provides the company with a real-time view of its fleet operations, while also offering a mobile application that facilitates pickups and deliveries for drivers.
From early 2023 through the first quarter of 2024, PITT OHIO estimates that it has achieved approximately $11 million in savings in major pickup and delivery operations thanks to the new platform and that drivers have saved an average of 20 minutes per day. Other improvements include:
Drivers being able to access stop information through a mobile application without exiting their vehicles.
Drivers being able to automatically clock in and out from vehicles.
Drivers being able to report issues to customer service in real time when a delivery is refused, a customer is closed, or a redelivery is needed.
Updates being provided between drivers and dispatchers about customer needs, weather concerns, and traffic conditions.
Maintenance requests being automatically sent digitally to truck depots, with repairs scheduled when the vehicle returns.
Drivers saving an average of 15 minutes per pickup thanks to automatic population of customer data at large distribution centers.
PITT OHIO being able to integrate a competitor's shipments into its own network without adding additional office personnel in the event of a competitor's bankruptcy.
PITT OHIO plans to make additional enhancements to its new system in the coming months and, working with the Maven team, identify areas where the system can increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability. The strategies and insights gained from this initiative can serve as a model for other trucking and logistics companies across the industry seeking to modernize their legacy systems.
