Panama Canal Expands Ship Transit Capacity as Water Levels Rise

The Panama Canal announced that it has raised the maximum permitted draft for vessels to 45 feet ahead of schedule, citing the early onset of the rainy season and current and projected water levels in Gatun Lake. The change was originally slated to take effect on June 15, but was accelerated due to prevailing conditions. According to Panama Canal authorities, daily transits through the Panamax locks increased from 17 to 24 on May 16. Daily transits through the Neopanamax locks will be increased from seven to eight as of June 1. With this adjustment, the total daily vessel transits will reach 32. Additionally, water levels in Gatun and Alhajuela Lakes rose above 2023 levels for the first time as of May 26. The Panama Canal is monitoring weather conditions in the region daily and making operational adjustments commensurate with increased water inflows. According to the Financial Times, vessel traffic through the Panama Canal has increased following an easing of drought conditions in the region.
