MSC Enhances Lithium Battery Shipping Safety Through Partnership With GSBN

MSC announced today that it will partner with Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), a neutral, non-profit consortium that enables paperless shipping data exchange, to enhance the safe transportation of lithium battery shipments. The initiative gains importance due to the increasing presence of lithium-ion batteries transported on container vessels and the growing risk of misclassification of these cargoes.

To mitigate this risk, MSC will integrate the lithium battery shipment booking process with GSBN and gain access to immutable secure transport certificates shared directly by product safety laboratories through GSBN's blockchain network.

GSBN provides these certificates through leading Chinese testing laboratories and certification providers. GSBN aims to expand its collaboration with additional certification and laboratory networks in the future.

Additionally, other ocean carriers such as Hapag-Lloyd are also benefiting from GSBN's digital solutions by gaining the capability to issue electronic bills of lading.

Key Points
  1. MSC is enhancing the safety of lithium battery shipments through partnership with GSBN.

  2. GSBN provides secure transport certificates through its blockchain network.

  3. Leading Chinese laboratories and certification providers are involved in this process.

  4. GSBN plans to expand its collaboration and offer more certificates.

  5. Hapag-Lloyd is adopting GSBN's electronic bill of lading (eBL) solution and aims for 100% electronic bills of lading by 2030.
