Methanol-Powered Container Vessel 'Ane Maersk' Calls at Hamburg

Maersk's methanol-powered container vessel 'Ane Maersk' made a port call at Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg on its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.

The 'Ane Maersk', the first vessel to set sail using methanol fuel, was recognized during its Hamburg port call as a symbol of the maritime sector's rapid progress toward climate neutrality and Hamburg Port's commitment to carbon neutrality.

The vessel features innovative design with bridge superstructures positioned at the bow's forefront, measuring 350 meters in length and 53.5 meters in width. Methanol contains roughly half the energy content of fossil oil, meaning nearly twice as much methanol is required. The 'Ane Maersk' operates on environmentally friendly bio-methanol, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately two-thirds compared to fossil fuels. Synthetically produced e-methanol could reduce emissions by more than 90 percent in the future.

Maersk will source green e-methanol from a European energy production facility scheduled to become operational this summer. Due to the limited global supply of green methanol, the Ane Maersk and her sister vessels can also operate on biodiesel or fossil ultra-low sulfur oil thanks to dual-fuel technology.

Maersk will have 23 new methanol-capable vessels under construction by 2027 (ranging from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU). Methanol offers advantages as a shipping fuel, being easy to use and non-toxic. The 'Ane Maersk' has been assigned to Maersk's Asia-Europe service line (AE-7) and will call at 14 ports.
