Lloyd's Register Releases Digital Maturity Assessment for Maritime Sector
Lloyd's Register (LR) has announced the publication of a Digital Maturity Framework and Index designed to assess and benchmark an organization's digital maturity. LR developed this initiative in collaboration with Thetius, which created the digital maturity model called 'The Benchmark'.
The model provides a starting point for understanding an organization's position across the digital transformation spectrum—from basic digital infrastructure to advanced data-driven decision-making processes. LR's Digital Maturity Index (DMI) serves as a free web-based tool rooted in real maritime use cases, enabling businesses to analyze their digital readiness, compare themselves against sector competitors, and identify areas where they should invest in technology and capabilities.
During the pilot phase, five major tanker and dry bulk companies assessed their digital maturity across all aspects of their operations, from digital infrastructure to cultural integration. Mark Warner, Global Content and Communications Director at LR, stated, "The LR Digital Maturity Index was developed in collaboration with our pilot customers and underwent a rigorous discovery process. It is unique to the maritime industry and encompasses approximately 50 digital use cases."
Warner emphasized that preliminary findings show companies demonstrating higher maturity levels in critical enablers such as connectivity, cloud computing, and cybersecurity, but lower maturity in implementing digital culture, skills, training, and data standardization. This underscores the need for comprehensive digital strategy adoption and a uniform approach to data standards.
According to LR, the findings from the Thetius report highlight the importance of a comprehensive digital strategy established at board or C-Suite level, resource allocation to technology and personnel skills, willingness to take risks and experiment with new technologies, and leveraging external expertise.
In alignment with the Digital Maturity Index, LR will develop a new digital transformation consulting service to help its customers overcome barriers to maritime digitalization. James Frew, Director of Lloyd's Register Business Consultancy, stated, "The Digital Maturity Index provides ship owners with a useful framework for assessing their digital maturity and allows them to explore consulting support and services tailored to their needs."
"We currently support some of the world's largest ship operators on maritime operational digitalization, and we can now provide ship owners with reliable advice on how to realize the real benefits of digitalization," he added.
