Kazakhstan Boosts Capacity by 40% at Critical Rail Border Crossing

Sedat Onat
Comprehensive sector overview of Kazakhstan's infrastructure investments along the Altynkol–Khorgos rail border corridor, highlighting capacity enhancements on Asia–Europe rail routes, congestion relief, and strengthened transit performance

Kazakhstan is fortifying critical border infrastructure that plays a key role in Asia–Europe rail freight transport. The country is increasing train handling capacity at the Altynkol rail yard, located near the Chinese border, by 40 percent through targeted investments. This move aims specifically to ease congestion on Asia–Europe rail routes and alleviate long-standing border crossing bottlenecks.

Altynkol, situated immediately adjacent to the Khorgos border crossing, functions as a strategic hub not only for Kazakhstan–China bilateral trade but also for transit cargo bound for Europe. The Khorgos corridor has increasingly approached capacity limits due to surging train traffic in recent years, creating delays. These new investments represent a concrete step toward alleviating this structural pressure.

At the heart of the capacity expansion lie six new rail lines added to the Altynkol yard. These additional tracks push daily train handling capacity from 20 trains to 28 trains. This is expected to reduce the number of trains waiting at border crossings and bring operational flows into better balance. Officials note the increase will enable faster clearance of trains that accumulate at the border during peak periods.

The investments extend beyond the Altynkol yard itself. Kazakhstan is also advancing double track infrastructure work on a 32-kilometre rail line stretching between Altynkol and Zhetygen. Zhetygen lies directly north of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, and sits on a major west-bound rail corridor toward Europe. Capacity enhancements on this line will support faster and uninterrupted progression of cross-border trains through the domestic network.

The project also encompasses construction of five new sidings and upgrades to eight existing sidings. Once completed, the daily throughput capacity on the relevant rail section is projected to rise from 18 trains to 33 trains. Project completion is targeted for 2026. This expansion will substantially boost Kazakhstan's freight capacity along the Middle Corridor.

Kazakhstan's other principal rail border gateway with China, the Dostyk–Alashankou line, is simultaneously registering strong performance. During the first 11 months of 2025, total cargo volume crossing this border point reached 17.8 million tonnes, a 6 percent increase. Notably, wagon count rose by only 1 percent to 450,200 units over the same period. This reflects improving operational efficiency on the line.

Looking at the details, outgoing wagons held steady at 209,700 while freight tonnage rose 4 percent to 12.9 million tonnes. On the incoming wagons side, a modest 1 percent increase to 241,000 wagons occurred; conversely, inbound cargo tonnage surged 12 percent to 4.8 million tonnes. Export shipments recorded 138,900 wagons, up 6 percent, and 9.2 million tonnes, up 10 percent. These figures demonstrate that significantly more cargo is being transported per wagon and operations are being managed with greater efficiency.

Viewed holistically, Kazakhstan's investments in Altynkol and Dostyk are reinforcing the country's role as a Eurasian rail transit hub. Expanded capacity does more than merely ease existing bottlenecks; it also strengthens the competitiveness of the Kazakhstan route in China–Europe rail freight. These developments carry critical importance for the long-term sustainability of the Middle Corridor.
