UK Implements New Regulations for Marine Environmental Protection in Shipping
The UK government has announced it will implement new laws regulating ship anti-fouling systems to enhance marine environmental protection. These new regulations will enforce an international agreement banning the use of cybutryne in marine paints.
Cybutryne is known to be a substance that can harm marine flora and fauna and enter the food chain. The new laws will come into force on 10 May and will apply to all UK-flagged vessels wherever they navigate. They will also cover vessels flying other countries' flags that operate in UK-controlled or UK territorial waters. Existing restrictions on equally hazardous substances, such as organotin chemicals, will remain in place.
The Merchant Shipping (Anti-Fouling Systems) Regulations 2024, which have been formally adopted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), are based on the amended convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Beyond addressing this type of marine pollution, the new measures consolidate regulations in a single framework, making it easier to track future changes. MCA Chief Virginia McVea noted that the harmful ecological effects of these substances have been demonstrated, making these steps essential for environmental protection. Through these regulations, the UK is contributing to global efforts to protect marine ecosystems.
