BIMCO and ICS Release Guide to Reduce Ship Noise
The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) and International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) have developed a handbook to help the maritime sector understand and minimize underwater radiated noise from ships.
In recent years, focus on underwater radiated noise from ships has increased dramatically, and the impetus for action has grown due to its adverse effects on marine life and the environment. Commercial shipping is recognized as one of the primary sources of underwater noise at low frequencies, and research shows that this noise damages vital life processes of various marine organisms.
Michelle Sanders, Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), stated: "Ocean noise damages the critical life functions of a broad range of marine life, including marine mammals, fish, and invertebrate species. Many coastal communities, particularly indigenous peoples, depend on these species for food, livelihoods, and culture. Reducing underwater radiated noise from ships is not merely an environmental responsibility; it is critical to safeguarding ocean health."
BIMCO and ICS encourage all ship owners and operators to recognize the importance of minimizing underwater noise and to take necessary steps to properly implement IMO recommendations. For this purpose, the practical "Underwater Radiated Noise Guide" examines the causes of underwater noise and its broad impacts on marine life. It also addresses the content of IMO regulations, how to develop a noise management strategy, and the scope of regional legislation and voluntary initiatives.
The guide also explores the relationship between various energy efficiency measures and underwater noise. David Loosley, BIMCO Secretary General and CEO, stated: "Energy-efficient ships are quiet ships. As our sector reduces greenhouse gas emissions through the adoption of energy efficiency measures, underwater radiated noise levels will also decrease, helping to protect marine life and the environment."
The guide from BIMCO and ICS is designed for technical superintendents and ship officers to help them understand what underwater radiated noise is and how it can be reduced.
