World's Largest Sailing Cargo Ship Completes First Transatlantic Voyage

The world's largest sailing cargo ship has successfully completed its first transatlantic voyage — spanning two weeks from Nantes France to Port of Baltimore. Designed by French maritime company Neoline, the 446 ft Neoliner Origin is capable of carrying 5,200 tons of cargo — including large-scale roll-on/roll-off vehicle cargo — while reducing carbon emissions by 80% compared to similarly sized vessels powered by conventional fuels. The vessel operates primarily on wind power, equipped with two 216 ft carbon fiber masts and approximately 32,300 sq ft of sail area. From a supply chain perspective, Neoline, founded in 2011 by Jean Zanuttini and based in Nantes France, operates as a wind-assisted commercial maritime company. Neoliner Origin's primary shipping clients include Renault Group, Beneteau Group (marine vessels), Manitou Group (forklifts), Michelin, Hennessy (cognac), and Clarins (cosmetics). Key Atlantic routes include Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon (French island), Halifax Canada, and Baltimore U.S. — offering roll-on/roll-off service.


From a supply chain perspective, the global maritime sector is regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). IMO 2020 reduced global marine fuel sulfur content from 3.5% to 0.5%. IMO 2030 targets 20-30% CO2 reduction; IMO 2040 targets 70-80% reduction; and IMO 2050 aims for net zero. Key energy efficiency instruments include EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index), CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator), and SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan). Pyxis Ocean, a collaboration between Cargill and BAR Technologies, reported 30% fuel savings with WindWings in 2023. Port of Baltimore ranks as the 9th largest port on the U.S. East Coast — particularly a leader in RoRo and automotive imports. The Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck and collapsed by the MV Dali container ship in March 2024, temporarily closing the port. Port of Nantes-Saint Nazaire is France's 4th largest port. Key energy efficiency practices include green shipping, slow steaming, route optimization, port call optimization, and just-in-time arrival. In conclusion, Neoliner Origin's maiden voyage success demonstrates the technical maturity of wind-assisted commercial maritime shipping — and exemplifies the multi-technology trajectory the sector is pursuing on its decarbonization journey.
