ESA and Partners Launch DECARDIS Initiative for Carbon Reduction in Shipping
The European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with Awake.AI, ABB, and Wallenius Marine, has launched a new initiative called "Decarbonization through Digitalization in Shipping" (DECARDIS). Financed by ESA and led by Awake.AI, the project aims to develop a port call optimization solution that addresses inefficiencies between ships and ports to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The partners note that despite significant advances in ship technology and port automation, communication and data sharing between port and ship systems remain limited. Since navigation and berthing information is typically held in closed systems, vessels arrive on schedule but frequently encounter delays upon arrival. This situation leads to unnecessary fuel consumption and increased emissions.
The DECARDIS project aims to create an interoperable platform that integrates ship routing and speed decisions with precise port arrival timings. As a first in the field, the solution aims to optimize entire journeys rather than isolated segments and can significantly reduce emissions when adopted at a global scale.
The project aligns with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) target of net zero GHG emissions by 2050 and the European Union's Climate Target Plan. The EU's plan mandates a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
DECARDIS will combine the OVERSEA voyage optimization platform, developed by ABB and Wallenius Marine, with Awake.AI's port call optimization technology to provide users with a single web-based interface accessible aboard ships. OVERSEA users will receive support from advanced digital solutions and shore-based experts to optimize ship operational performance, reduce fuel costs, and lower emissions.
Jesper Lögdström, Head of Wallenius Marine Performance Management Center, said: "With the OVERSEA collaboration, we are establishing an intelligent fleet support service that enhances efficiency. We aim to provide crew and shore personnel with a shared understanding of the data and support them with insights and actionable recommendations. Transparency and close collaboration with customers will be critical to success."
Karno Tenovuo, CEO of Awake.AI, stated: "Together with ABB and Wallenius Marine, we have a shared vision for the industry: What if no ship ever had to rush to wait? Every vessel would sail at optimal speed and follow the most suitable route at all times. By combining the technologies we have for port call optimization with ABB and Wallenius Marine's voyage optimization, we can turn this vision into reality."
This project is part of ESA's broader initiative to support sustainable shipping solutions and help the industry comply with evolving European and international regulatory standards.
