Damen and Windcat Introduce Innovation Series Vessels for Offshore Energy
During the Offshore Energy Conference held in Amsterdam, Windcat and Damen Shipyards Group announced a new Multi-Purpose Accommodation Support Vessel (MP-ASV) class called the Innovation Series, which marks a new era in the offshore energy sector. The agreement signed on November 25, 2025, encompasses a firm order for the first vessel and options for five additional ships. This new series provides a larger and more capable platform built upon the Elevation Series Commissioning Services Operations Vessels (CSOVs) previously developed by Windcat and Damen.
The new MP-ASV class, with dimensions of 102m x 20m, offers wider operational capability compared to previous CSOV designs. The vessel features a 750m² open deck, a 150-ton capacity subsea crane, and infrastructure suitable for ROV operations. The design presents a hybrid structure that combines both heavy-lift operations and long-duration accommodation for offshore energy projects on the same platform.
One of the strongest features of the Innovation Series is its design aligned with decarbonization objectives. The integrated 3981 kWh battery package on the vessel, combined with a DC grid system, supports low-emission operations. Through this configuration, peak shaving is applied; main engines are maintained at their most efficient operating point during variable-speed operations, and fuel consumption is reduced particularly during DP operations. Additionally, as with Windcat CSOVs, dual fuel hydrogen engine integration enables auxiliary generators to operate on hydrogen. This approach significantly reduces the vessel's carbon footprint.
Another important feature of the series is its high-standard accommodation spaces designed for long-duration offshore stays. The vessel has the capacity to accommodate up to 190 personnel for 28 days. A motion compensated gangway is used for safe transfer to and from offshore structures, and the system's ability to provide fixed connections enhances operational safety. Damen and Windcat prioritize easy navigation, aesthetic balance, ergonomics, and high-quality materials in interior design. This approach aims to reduce the effects of seasickness and homesickness on personnel during extended sea operations.
On the operational safety front, the Innovation Series stands out with its DP2+ dynamic positioning system. In addition to azimuth thrusters, the vessel features tunnel thrusters at both the bow and stern. This additional configuration allows the vessel to continue operations in DP2 mode even in the event of thruster failure; this capability is critical, especially in remote offshore fields.
Damen Sales Manager Joost van der Weiden stated that the cooperation with Windcat is progressing in line with innovation objectives and that the new series sets new standards in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Windcat Managing Director Willem van der Wel noted that the Innovation Series presents a hybrid vessel type that combines the advantages of both the MPSV and ASV worlds, and that this design emerged from a philosophy of continuous development according to customer needs.
Construction of the first MP-ASV vessel is planned to begin in February 2026, with delivery expected in 2028. Like the CSOV fleet, these vessels will be constructed at the Vietnam – Ha Long Shipyard facility.
The new Innovation Series is positioned as an innovative and high-capacity solution designed to meet the increasing scale, duration, and safety expectations of modern offshore energy projects.
