VARD Signs Contract for Five Walk-to-Work Vessels with International Customer
VARD, based in Ålesund, Norway, announced on November 20, 2024, that it has signed a significant contract with an international customer for the design and construction of five Walk-to-Work vessels. As one of the world's leading specialized ship designers and builders, VARD aims to strengthen its leading position in the offshore energy market through this new project.
Under the contract, the five Walk-to-Work vessels to be built will provide maintenance, supply, and operational services to offshore platforms in the oil and gas sector. The vessels will be based on the VARD 3 32 design, developed by VARD in accordance with the customer's requirements. This design incorporates low fuel consumption, high operability, and the latest hull designs that optimize comfort. Additionally, the vessels will feature hybrid diesel/electric and battery-powered propulsion systems, a 3D motion-compensated gangway system, and a 3D motion-compensated crane. Comprehensive accommodation areas will be designed to provide high comfort and excellent working conditions for the crew and technicians on board.
Cathrine Kristiseter Marti, CEO of Vard Group, stated that the new contract reinforces VARD's leading position in support vessels for the offshore energy market, expressing pride that the customer chose VARD. Marti emphasized VARD's strength in delivering innovative solutions specifically developed for customer needs and highlighted the company's success in collaborating with clients on advanced technology-based ship designs.
Ove Dimmen, SVP Sales and Marketing, noted that he is responsible for the commercial aspects of the contract, expressing gratitude for the customer's important order and stating that this achievement is the result of intensive collaboration to economically adapt the vessel concept to operational requirements. Dimmen emphasized that all parties overcame challenges through extra effort, a positive attitude, and solution-oriented mindset, and looked forward to continued collaboration throughout the construction process.
The vessels will be equipped with comprehensive SeaQ packages supplied by Vard Electro. These packages include an advanced power system designed to optimize energy consumption on board and improve distribution across all operational modes. Through SeaQ DC Switchboards and SeaQ Energy Storage System integration, energy management will become more efficient. Additionally, the vessels' control and monitoring systems will be delivered digitally, incorporating the SeaQ Integrated Automation System, SeaQ Energy Power Management System, and SeaQ Green Pilot. Green Pilot stands out as an advanced cloud-based service that provides operators with access to critical vessel information such as fuel consumption, emission analysis, and historical data.
HVAC-R, piping systems, and modern interior design solutions provided by Vard Interiors will create functional environments on the vessels that support crew welfare. All five vessels will be constructed, equipped, commissioned, and delivered at the Vard Vung Tau facility in Vietnam. The first four vessels are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2027, while the fifth vessel is planned for delivery in early 2028.
This new project further demonstrates VARD's competence in developing customized solutions and designing advanced technology vessels in collaboration with customers. The five Walk-to-Work vessels will serve as versatile platforms focused on logistics, comfort, large storage capacity, and superior operability in offshore support operations, and will provide a sustainable option prepared for the widespread use of electric power in the future.
