BIMCO Approves AUTOSHIPMAN Agreement for Remotely Operated Vessels

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) Documentation Committee has approved the AUTOSHIPMAN agreement in response to the growing number of remotely operated vessels. This agreement establishes a standard contractual framework for third-party ship managers providing services for the operation of remotely controlled or fully autonomous vessels.

\n

\n

AUTOSHIPMAN was developed on the basis of the widely used SHIPMAN agreement and provides a framework addressing obligations, responsibilities, and commitments in the management of commercial services. BIMCO noted that one of the key benefits of AUTOSHIPMAN is its flexibility, which allows vessels to change their operational modes even during voyages. This feature is of critical importance for compliance with legal requirements in certain jurisdictions where remotely operated vessels must maintain partial or full crew aboard when transiting territorial waters or approaching ports.

\n

Captain Ajay Hazari from Anglo Eastern, who led the AUTOSHIPMAN drafting team, stated, "Currently, remotely operated vessels are operating commercially in various regions around the world. We are seeing growth in this sector, and many companies are providing remote management services to ship owners."

\n

Grant Hunter, BIMCO's Director of Standards, Innovation and Research, said, "AUTOSHIPMAN is BIMCO's first step into the commercial operation of remotely controlled vessels and possibly eventually fully autonomous vessels. During the development of AUTOSHIPMAN, we received assistance from legal and insurance experts, and throughout the process we gained valuable insights from companies operating vessels remotely around the world."
