ABS and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate across a broad range of initiatives supporting sustainability, digital innovation and operational resilience in the maritime and offshore sectors. The agreement places particular emphasis on accelerating the development of next-generation energy solutions as decarbonisation and digital transformation reshape the global ocean energy landscape.

The scope of cooperation covers several strategic focus areas including offshore wind development, offshore substations, small modular reactors, offshore spaceport infrastructure and carbon capture and storage value chain solutions, alongside the enabling digital technologies that support sustainable and efficient operations. The two organisations will explore practical opportunities to address decarbonisation challenges, digital transformation requirements and evolving operational demands across the global offshore energy sector.

Matthew Tremblay, ABS Senior Vice President for Global Offshore, described the agreement as reflecting a shared focus on delivering forward-looking solutions by combining ABS's marine and offshore experience with HHI's expertise in ocean energy and offshore engineering. Tremblay emphasised that the partnership's shared vision is to enhance safety and efficiency across the sector.

Kwangsik Won, Senior Executive Vice President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, highlighted the growing importance of cross-sector collaboration as low-carbon offshore energy solutions and digital integration become central to long-term competitiveness, safety and efficiency across the industry. Won stated that such strategic partnerships will shape the future of the sector.

The agreement represents the latest expansion of collaboration between South Korea-based global shipbuilding major HD Hyundai and US-based classification society ABS. The two organisations aim to conduct joint R&D work and set industry standards, particularly in renewable energy and decarbonisation.
