India and China are resuming direct flights after more than five years — with two of the world's largest economies seeking to rebuild political relations at a time of rising global trade uncertainties. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in an October 2 statement that air service with China could begin by month-end, pending commercial decisions by the designated carriers of both countries and compliance with other operational criteria. The move follows bilateral discussions earlier this year aimed at restoring air connectivity. Bloomberg News reported in August, citing people familiar with the matter, that direct flights were expected to resume shortly. Passenger flights between India and China were suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic. Diplomatic relations between the two countries hit their lowest point after border clashes in 2020 — a connection that never resumed. Passengers between the two neighboring countries currently transit through hubs such as Hong Kong or Singapore. From a supply chain perspective, the Galwan Valley border clash (Aksai Chin; Ladakh) in June 2020 resulted in the deaths of at least 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese troops — causing relations between the two nuclear powers to sink to their lowest level in decades. S. Jaishankar is Indian External Affairs Minister. Wang Yi is Chinese Foreign Minister — meeting in New Delhi in August.

From a supply chain perspective, diplomatic relations between the long-time rivals are rising at a time when U.S. tariffs are adding to economic uncertainty in the world's two most populous countries. In August, China and India agreed to facilitate bilateral trade and investment following foreign affairs minister talks in New Delhi. India's largest carrier, IndiGo, said it will resume flights to China starting October 26 — launching daily service. InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) was founded in 2006 by Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, based in Gurugram India — becoming India's dominant domestic and international airline — commanding over 60% of India's domestic market share. Pieter Elbers is IndiGo's CEO. Air India (Tata Group owned); Vistara (merging with Air India); SpiceJet; Akasa Air (founded by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala); Alliance Air; Air India Express are major Indian airlines. Air China; China Eastern Airlines; China Southern Airlines; Hainan Airlines; Xiamen Airlines; Sichuan Airlines; Shenzhen Airlines; Shandong Airlines; Spring Airlines; Juneyao Airlines are major Chinese airlines.

From a supply chain perspective, India-China economic relations are navigating complex balances within major multilateral frameworks: the world's 2nd and 5th largest economies by nominal GDP (China and India); the largest two populations (1.4 billion+ each); and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and expanding BRICS+ with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE); the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation); RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership; excluding India); and the QUAD (U.S., Japan, India, Australia). India's imports from China exceed $100 billion in 2024 — with main product categories being electronics, machinery, chemicals, pharmaceutical APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), and mobile phone components. India's exports to China are only $15-20 billion — with iron ore, cotton, granite, and seafood as main export categories. This large imbalance has been a long-standing concern of India's Modi government.

From a supply chain perspective, India's rising role in global supply chains is driven by Make in India (launched 2014), PLI (Production Linked Incentive), Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), the India Semiconductor Mission, Vande Bharat (domestic trains), Bharat Forge, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, Adani Group (Adani Ports, Adani Logistics, APSEZ, Mundra Port), JSW Group, Jindal Steel, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Asian Paints among leading industrial giants. Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron (Tata Electronics), Apple suppliers are manufacturing iPhones in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Major Indian ports include Mundra, JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust; Nhava Sheva), Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Cochin, Kandla, Paradip, Tuticorin. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was announced at the 2023 G20 Delhi — positioned as an alternative to China's BRI. Ultimately, the resumption of India-China direct flights represents a notable concrete indicator of the rebalancing of global geoeconomics and India-China normalization.
