Walmart Ramps Up Automation: Autonomous Forklifts and Fox Robotics Partnership
Walmart is deploying 19 autonomous forklifts to automate its logistics operations and has acquired a minority stake in Fox Robotics, the company supplying the equipment. The move follows a 16-month proof-of-concept trial at Walmart Distribution Center 6020 in Brooksville, Florida. Under the partnership, autonomous forklifts called FoxBot will be used at four of Walmart's distribution centers to unload pallets from trucks.

Maurice Gray, general manager of the distribution center, noted that automation not only eases the workload but also enables employees to work more efficiently. FoxBot forklifts use AI-powered machine vision and dynamic planning to unload pallets from trucks and transport them to an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) that catalogs and stores incoming goods. Walmart employees, who previously performed these tasks manually, now focus on directing the autonomous forklifts to develop more efficient strategies.
\nFox Robotics board member Till Reuter stated that the company's autonomous loading and unloading capacity represents the final step toward a fully automated warehouse future. Reuter noted that logistics will be the largest market for automation over the next 5-10 years, with automation particularly concentrated in shipping and receiving areas where manual labor is currently intensive.
