Valenciaport Unveils New Environmental Strategy: Net Zero, Green Corridors and Hydrogen at the Core

Valenciaport strengthened its climate adaptation and sustainable port goals through its new environmental strategy unveiled at Ecofira 2025, featuring a Net Zero Plan, renewable energy, shore-power (OPS), alternative fuels, green corridors and the Hydrogen Valley project in Sagunto.

Valenciaport unveiled its new environmental strategy to the public as part of the Ecofira Environmental Solutions Fair. At the center of sustainability initiatives driven by the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) are decarbonization, climate resilience and climate change mitigation. The strategy provides a framework aligned with the Net Zero Plan that shapes the port's long-term transformation roadmap.

According to APV, the new plan aims to establish Valenciaport as a leader in renewable energy use, a low-emission and competitive Mediterranean gateway. The plan's main components include:

  • Expansion of shore-side electricity supply (OPS) infrastructure,

  • Testing of hydrogen, biofuels and other alternative fuels,

  • Creation of green maritime corridors,

  • Climate adaptation strategies,

  • Nature-based solutions and environmental compensation projects
    are included.

Net Zero and Renewable Energy Vision

Under its Net Zero Plan, Valenciaport is increasing renewable energy use across all port operations. To achieve this goal:

  • Large-scale solar energy projects,

  • Wind energy integration,

  • Transition to electric operational equipment
    are being planned.

By expanding OPS infrastructure, the port aims to eliminate fossil fuel consumption while vessels are docked. This will significantly reduce carbon emissions, particularly for container and ro-ro ships with intensive operations.

Green Corridors and Hydrogen Ecosystem

One of the standout elements of the new strategy is the promotion of green corridors. Valenciaport aims to establish emission-reduction trade routes with Mediterranean and Northern European ports. This aligns with the Maritime Fuels Transition and the EU's FuelEU Maritime objectives.

Additionally, Hydrogen Valley initiatives in the Sagunto region involve the port's participation in pilot projects on hydrogen production, storage and utilization. These efforts will enable heavy equipment and terminal vehicles to be powered by green hydrogen in the medium and long term.

Climate Adaptation Projects

Valenciaport's strategy is not limited to emission reduction; it also includes strengthening infrastructure to adapt to climate impacts such as flooding risk, heat waves and coastal erosion. The port's climate resilience is being enhanced through flexible sea-based design solutions and nature-based interventions.

Environmental Communications and Digitalization

At the Valenciaport booth at Ecofira, the port's ongoing projects were detailed:

  • Carbon emission reduction dashboards,

  • Energy efficiency programs,

  • Natural ecosystem restoration,

  • Waste management practices
    were detailed.

Digitalization is also a critical part of the strategy. In this context, APV signed an agreement worth €6.9 million ($7.9 million) with Orange Spain last week to deploy a dedicated 5G network for the port. This network will support sustainability functions such as energy management, equipment optimization and real-time environmental monitoring.

Key Takeaways:

  • Valenciaport's new environmental strategy places Net Zero, OPS and alternative fuels at its core.

  • Green corridors and Hydrogen Valley Sagunto partnerships are critical components of the strategy.

  • The port's goal: a low-emission, competitive and climate-resilient operating model.

  • APV awarded the €6.9 million 5G network tender for the port to Orange Spain.

  • The strategy aligns with the United Nations SDG objectives.
