United Kingdom Shipping Sector Net Zero Vision
United Kingdom Shipping Sector Net Zero Vision
The Environment Audit Committee has released its findings on the United Kingdom's 'net zero' target for the shipping sector. In March 2021, the Committee launched an inquiry to promote decarbonization in civil aviation and shipping sectors, where reducing carbon emissions has proven difficult. The Committee's report calls for the government to update the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan within three months of the 2024 State Opening of Parliament.
\nThe government should demonstrate its commitment to supporting the maritime sector's transition to net zero, examine financing opportunities for maritime decarbonization and matched funding for research and development at least through 2030. A strategy to support the production of zero-emission marine fuels should be established with a delivery plan containing specific production milestones, and consultation should be conducted on implementing a revenue support mechanism to encourage commercial production.
