UK-based shipowner Union Maritime has decided to install BAR Tech wind-assisted ship propulsion technology on two LR2 tankers under construction in China.

The two vessels, being built at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) and scheduled for delivery at the end of 2025, will each feature three WindWings rigid sails. Union Maritime's LRs are among the latest vessels to adopt BAR Tech's WindWings solution, following the installation of the technology on the Pyxis Ocean and Berge Olympus in the second half of 2023. John Cooper, CEO of BAR Tech, noted that this latest agreement demonstrates growing demand for WindWings technology and the benefits it can bring to the maritime industry.

Additionally, BAR Technologies' production partner CM Energy Tech (CMET) is managing the WindWings value chain, procurement, construction and installation at Asian shipyards. WindWings operates in conjunction with a route optimisation system that allows for adjustment of the rigid sails based on criteria such as wind conditions and vessel speed. According to BAR Tech, the technology has the potential to deliver daily fuel savings of 1.5 tonnes and approximately 5 tonnes of CO2 savings per sail on typical global routes.
