Uber Freight and Better Trucks Join Forces to Expand Last-Mile Capacity and Technology
Uber Freight has invested with a minority stake in Better Trucks to expand its last-mile delivery network and strengthen its technological capabilities. This move enables the expansion of the commercial partnership between the two companies and significantly increases customer delivery coverage.
Under the new arrangement, Uber Freight and Better Trucks will be able to transfer delivery volume to each other's service areas. This allows both companies to expand their geographic coverage while delivering faster and more consistent delivery experiences to customers.
Uber Freight: Coverage Expands from 68% to 85%
According to the partnership announcement, with Better Trucks' capacity added, Uber Freight's last-mile network now reaches approximately 68% of the U.S. population.
Hany Elkordy, SVP of Uber Freight Last Mile, said the company aims to increase coverage to 85% by the end of 2026.
Better Trucks has strong operational capabilities, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
According to Elkordy, this combination is critical:
Uber Freight: broad regional connections and end-to-end network
Better Trucks: cost-effective last-mile distribution in high-density areas + strong technology
"We bring the end-to-end connectivity; they provide incredibly strong technology in these areas from a cost perspective," said Elkordy.
Address Validation and Geocoding: Technology That Reduces Costs
Better Trucks' advanced address validation and geocoding technologies are viewed as one of the most valuable assets the company brings to the partnership.
This technology:
Validates the address provided by the sender,
Identifies incomplete or incorrect addresses,
Converts the address to precise geographic coordinates.
As a result:
First-attempt delivery success rates increase,
Error-related additional costs (redelivery, missing access codes, etc.) decrease.
Elkordy's commentary summarizes the situation:
"There's nothing worse than a failed first delivery attempt due to an incorrect address."
Open API Architecture: Integrated End-to-End Technology Ecosystem
Better Trucks' open API structure also provides significant advantages for Uber Freight.
For example, if an Uber Freight customer previously used tracking software that Better Trucks was integrated with, Uber Freight can activate this connection directly.
This means:
Integration costs decrease,
Customer experience accelerates,
Multiple software connections are unified under one roof.
This architectural approach makes a significant difference, particularly in multi-system e-commerce operations.
Better Trucks' Opportunity: Broader Customer Base + Investment Support
Andy Whiting, CEO of Better Trucks, said that Uber Freight's investment will increase the company's technology capacity and support it in scaling its operations.
Better Trucks is planning by 2026 to:
Launch operations in more major cities,
Open new facilities,
Expand its last-mile network nationwide
Volume from Uber Freight will further strengthen Better Trucks' position in high-demand areas.
Elkordy also shared this detail:
"In some markets, Uber Direct shipments are coming entirely out of Better Trucks facilities."
An important indicator showing how deep this integration is becoming.
Investment Growth Possible, but Uncertain
The parties did not disclose the financial terms of the partnership.
Whether Uber Freight will increase its stake in the future remains unclear.
Elkordy:
"It depends on how things progress in the coming year. We're monitoring the development."
Key Points:
Uber Freight became a minority shareholder in Better Trucks.
Goal: increase last-mile coverage to 85% and strengthen technology.
Better Trucks: provides address validation, geocoding, open API, and strong urban performance.
Partnership includes mutual volume flow and shared network utilization.
The collaboration will open new markets for Uber Direct and other last-mile solutions.
