Turkey's First Port to Supply Shore Power: Asyaport

Asyaport has become Turkey's first port to supply shore power to container vessels with the recent installation of an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system. The new system aims to reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact by supplying electricity to ships waiting at the port. The system has the capacity to deliver high-voltage power simultaneously to two mainline vessels and three feeder vessels.

The newly established shore power facility represents an addition to the terminal's existing technology portfolio for emission reduction. Asyaport is already taking significant steps toward sustainability by operating fully electric cranes. MSC Oscar, which operates between Asia and Europe via MSC's TIGER service, was recorded as the first ship to use the new system.

MSC OSCAR, one of the world's largest container vessels, has a capacity of approximately 20,000 TEU and is 396 meters long. During a 48-hour operation period, the ship's energy requirements at the port were successfully met through shore power supplied via the OPS system.

The project's construction and design were completed with a total budget of 10 million dollars, using primarily domestically sourced and national equipment. Following long-term feasibility and infrastructure studies conducted by Turkish teams, the terminal's OPS system was successfully implemented.

Besim Dönmez, Technical Services and Planning Manager at Asyaport, stated: "We are proud to be part of this project that demonstrates the capabilities of Turkish engineering. The installation of shore power at Asyaport will enable us to support our carrier customers in reducing emissions during their cargo operations and further develop Tekirdağ as an important center for sustainable global trade."
