Turkey and Iran Continue Work to Achieve Rail Freight Targets
Turkey and Iran are targeting a combined volume of one million tonnes in rail freight transportation for 2025. This target was set during a recent meeting between Turkish Ministry of Transport officials and Iranian authorities. However, this goal was first established in 2021, when similar growth was anticipated at that time. In 2020, rail freight traffic between the two countries was recorded at 564,000 tonnes.
In 2021, the reactivation of the Istanbul–Tehran–Islamabad Railway line was planned within the framework of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). This route connected Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan, covering a distance of 6,500 kilometres in approximately 15 days. However, due to political developments in Afghanistan and geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran, these plans did not progress as desired.
To achieve the targets set for 2025, the development of railway infrastructure between Turkey and Iran is of paramount importance. In particular, Iran's efforts to connect its Chabahar port to the railway network and Turkey's plans to increase the capacity of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway are among the projects that could positively impact freight volumes in the region.
Additionally, terminal expansion efforts by Azerbaijan and Iran in the Astara region under the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) framework continue. These developments could contribute to increased rail freight transportation between Turkey and Iran.
In conclusion, Turkey and Iran are continuing their infrastructure development and cooperation efforts to reach their one million tonne rail freight transportation target for 2025. Given the political and economic dynamics in the region, achieving this goal will depend on the transportation strategies of both countries.
