The U.S. trucking sector, which has weathered difficult economic conditions over the past several years, is now entering the initial stages of recovery. In May 2024, FTR's Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) climbed to 2.24, gaining positive momentum. The main drivers behind this increase include falling diesel prices and relatively stable freight rates. However, it may take several more months for the sector to achieve a full recovery.

According to FTR reports, this recovery in the sector is largely driven by declining fuel costs. Nevertheless, excess capacity remains a significant challenge. The current surplus of trucks and drivers could prevent prices and market conditions from fully stabilizing. While spot freight rates have shown faster improvement, excess capacity across the sector will continue to serve as a long-term headwind.

An acceleration in the sector's recovery will only be possible through further reduction in excess capacity. This could be supported particularly by private fleets slowing their expansion and a reduction in the overall vehicle fleet.
