Toyota Partners with Stax Engineering to Control Smokestack Emissions from Ro-Ro Ships

Toyota Motor North America has signed a five-year agreement with Stax Engineering effective from 2025 for all vessels calling at the Port of Long Beach. Stax Engineering is a venture-backed startup that provides services aimed at reducing smokestack emissions in maritime transport. Aligned with new California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, Stax will become the first and only emissions control provider serving roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels in California.

The agreement reflects rapid growth achieved by Stax Engineering since its market launch in the first quarter of this year. Supported by a $40 million investment round announced in July, the company holds exclusive service agreements at California ports including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hueneme, Benicia, Richmond, and Oakland. It has also established partnerships with companies such as NYK Line, Hyundai GLOVIS, Shell, and now Toyota.

Stax Engineering provides mobile emissions capture and control technology that can be used both onshore and on floating barge units for ship terminals and fleet operators. The technology can be deployed on vessels without any modifications and stands out as an alternative solution to shore power.

Toyota's Long Beach Vehicle Distribution Center imports approximately 200,000 vehicles annually via ro-ro vessels. Stax's flexible exhaust capture system connects to all vessel classes without modification, eliminating 99% of particulate matter (PM) emissions and 95% of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Over the lifetime of the new agreement with Toyota, Stax's service is estimated to cover approximately 3,700 operating hours and control more than 47 tons of emissions.

Stax CEO Mike Walker stated, "We set out to provide a reliable, easily accessible, and cost-effective emissions capture and control solution. As we begin serving Toyota, we believe we can meet the needs of the entire maritime sector. As we expand beyond California, establishing strong partnerships will increase confidence in and momentum for our technology."

This development is viewed as a positive step for both local air quality and public health and the environment. Stax Engineering's innovative approach could accelerate the transition to more sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
