Suez Canal Successfully Completes Transit of 42,000-Ton GREEN DOCK 3 Floating Dock
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced in December 2025 that GREEN DOCK 3, one of the world's largest towed floating docks, successfully transited through the Canal. SCA President Admiral Osama Rabiee emphasized that this operation proved "the Canal's ability to safely transit unconventional large marine units."
The transit of GREEN DOCK 3 required a complex special navigation operation. Because the floating dock does not move under its own power and is entirely maneuvered by tugboats. The operation was carried out with a total of five tugboats:
The tugboat PERSISTENCE towed the dock from the front,
Four SCA tugboats directed the dock from the sides and rear.
The dock transited as part of the southern convoy. The journey, which began in Indonesia before the Canal transit, passed smoothly through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandab region.

GREEN DOCK 3 is a colossal floating dock measuring 290 meters in length, 57 meters in width, and with an 8-meter draft depth. Weighing 42,000 tons, this structure ranks among the largest towed units ever to transit through the Suez Canal.
The transit lasted exactly 24 hours, and throughout the operation, procedures including special traffic management, speed restrictions, tugboat coordination, and utilization of the Canal's newly widened sections were implemented.

The widening of the Canal by 40 meters under the Southern Sector Development Project enables such large units to transit smoothly.
Economic Impact and Emission Savings
Rabiee also explained the economic impacts of the operation.
The Suez route is 6,000 nautical miles shorter compared to the Cape of Good Hope. This difference:
Reduces distance by 48%,
Significantly lowers fuel consumption and operational costs,
Prevents approximately 996 tons of CO₂ emissions.
These savings enhance Suez's global strategic value for large-volume and low-speed-tolerance maritime operations.
Performance of Operation Teams
Rabiee praised the professionalism of SCA pilots and tugboat crews. Viktor Kishlian, captain of tugboat PERSISTENCE, stated in his remarks that the journey from Indonesia to Egypt passed safely and once again confirmed the Canal's "time and cost-saving" advantages.
Finally, Kishlian described the Suez Canal as "the best route between East and West," emphasizing its critical importance for global commerce.
