New Opportunities for Rail Links Between Syria and Turkey

With Bashar al-Assad's rapid fall from power in Syria, new opportunities are emerging for the country. Turkey, its northern neighbor, has welcomed this political shift and is now proposing new rail transport plans alongside the restoration of diplomatic relations.

A year before Syria's civil war, Syria and Turkey had established a railway line between the Syrian city of Aleppo and Turkey's Mersin port. Despite this line remaining closed for over 12 years, Ankara is now seeking to reopen it. Plans are in place for both freight and passenger transport between the two countries via this rail corridor in the near future.

The Turkish section of the 365-kilometer line is reported to have passed inspections. Now, approval from the new Syrian authorities is required before repairs on the Syrian side of the line can proceed. In addition to Mersin and Aleppo, linking Iskenderun port to the railway is also planned. Furthermore, connections are being considered to enable passengers from Kilis and Gaziantep to use the line.

Ankara's ambitions extend beyond Aleppo, with plans also in place to extend the line to Syria's capital, Damascus.
