MSC Withdraws Megaships from Asia-North Europe Network: Alphaliner

Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) is pursuing a capacity reduction strategy on the Asia-North Europe route by replacing its megaships with smaller-tonnage vessels to ease pressure on freight rates, which have been trending downward since the start of the year, according to Alphaliner analysis.

This shift coincides with a period in which MSC is restructuring its operations as an independent carrier. Following the termination of its 2M partnership with Maersk, MSC has entered into a new slot-sharing agreement with Ocean Network Express (ONE), HMM, and Yang Ming Marine Transportation for Asia-Europe trade, covering nine services.

These strategic moves are seen as part of MSC's efforts in capacity management and adapting to market conditions. Fluctuations in the global container shipping market and excess supply are driving carriers to make more flexible and efficient operational decisions.
