Mongolia and China Plan to Open Second Rail Border Crossing by 2028
Mongolia's government has announced plans to open a new rail border crossing with China by 2028. The new connection aims to facilitate Mongolia's coal exports to China, increasing capacity by 30 million tons.
\nThe new border crossing will be located at Gashuun Sukhait, approximately 380 kilometers west of the currently operational Zamiin Uud crossing point. Existing rail infrastructure is present on both sides of the border at Gashuun Sukhait. Construction of the new connection is planned to begin in April 2025 and be completed by 2028.
\nWith this 30 million ton capacity increase, annual coal export capacity will reach 165 million tons. In 2024, Mongolia exported 83 million tons of coal to China. Beijing is seeking additional coal sources for its metallurgy industry, as current sanctions and tariffs are making imports from Russia and the United States more difficult.
