Egypt Completes Trial Run of New Suez Canal Extension

Egypt has successfully completed the trial run of a 10-kilometre new canal extension built at the southern end of the Suez Canal. During the trial, two vessels transited smoothly through the new bi-directional section of the channel.

\n

\n

This expansion was accelerated following the 2021 grounding of the container ship Ever Given, which blocked the canal for six days. The new extension aims to increase the canal's daily capacity by 6 to 8 vessels and strengthen its ability to manage potential emergencies. With this expansion, the total length of the canal's bi-directional section increased from 72 kilometres to 82 kilometres, while the canal's overall length now stands at 193 kilometres.

\n

\n

However, the Suez Canal has experienced significant revenue losses due to attacks on vessels in the Red Sea by Houthi militants from Yemen. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi noted that canal revenues declined by approximately $7 billion in 2024, representing a decline of more than 60 percent compared to 2023.

\n

\n

Egypt continues to evaluate additional expansion projects to further increase the canal's capacity and respond more effectively to emergencies.
