Global Software Outage: Microsoft and CrowdStrike System Failure Rattles the World

On July 19, 2024, a widespread software outage occurred globally. A malfunction in the systems of US technology giant Microsoft triggered disruptions across multiple sectors, halting operations. The aviation, banking, and media sectors were among the most severely affected. Sky News, a leading news channel in the United Kingdom, was unable to broadcast live and apologized to viewers. Airports, banks, and media organizations in countries including Australia, Turkey, and Germany were negatively impacted by the system outage.

The BTK stated that the outage was not caused by a cyberattack, but rather resulted from issues affecting institutions and organizations using CrowdStrike products. Troy Hunt, Microsoft's regional director, noted that the problem was related to CrowdStrike rather than Microsoft. Additionally, the Cyber Incident Response Center confirmed that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack.

As a result of the outage, flight delays were experienced in Sydney, Australia's capital, while 911 emergency services were disrupted across many US states. The London Stock Exchange suspended trading, while airports in Berlin and Prague halted flights or switched to manual control. Singapore's Changi Airport was forced to conduct check-in procedures manually. South Africa's largest bank, Capitec, was also impacted by the outage.

Issues affecting Microsoft 365, Azure, and other services were quickly resolved as some applications and services returned to full functionality. However, impacts continued to persist in some applications. Microsoft indicated that the problem stemmed from a configuration change in Azure backend workloads, which resulted in disruptions between storage and computing resources. Additionally, Microsoft disclosed that an update to CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor software caused issues on Windows 365 cloud computers, and that this problem was being addressed in the management center.

Turkish Airlines (THY) was also affected by the outage. THY Press Advisor Yahya Üstün stated that disruptions occurred in ticketing and reservation operations due to information system issues, and noted that necessary efforts were underway to prevent passenger inconvenience. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that systems would return to normal within hours and that necessary measures had been taken to prevent similar problems in the future.

Investigations into the cause of the outage determined that a faulty update to CrowdStrike's Falcon security software caused system crashes and widespread service disruptions on Windows systems. This affected Microsoft 365, Azure, Google, Reddit, Telegram, YouTube, and many other major platforms.

Regarding the global software outage, Elon Musk shared a humorous post on X (formerly Twitter), drawing attention to how users were following the events.

Key Points:
  • Source of the Outage: Not a cyberattack, but an issue with CrowdStrike products.

  • Affected Sectors: Aviation, banking, media, healthcare services, and more.

  • Notable Impacts: Sky News was unable to broadcast, 911 services were disrupted, THY reservation systems experienced disruptions.

  • Official Statements: Announcements from Microsoft and the BTK indicated that the issue was related to CrowdStrike.

  • Resolution Status: Microsoft 365 and some services have been restored, while impacts continue in some applications.

  • Government Intervention: The Australian government called an emergency meeting, and the Transportation Minister worked on restoring systems to normal.

  • Market Impact: CrowdStrike shares lost more than 12% in value.

  • User Guidance: Affected users were advised to attempt virtual machine restarts.

  • Social Media Response: Elon Musk addressed the incident humorously on the X platform.

This global software outage once again highlighted how critical and interconnected technology infrastructure is. International cooperation and technical interventions continue to resolve the issue promptly.
