A container gantry crane collapsed at Keelung Port during the delivery of new cranes for China Container Terminal Corporation. According to Taiwan News, the incident occurred on October 14 at around 2:00 p.m. The barge carrier Yuzhou Qi Hang, while transporting a newly purchased crane, collided with an existing shore-based crane at Pier 20. The impact of the collision caused the shore-based crane to topple.
\nNo injuries were reported in the incident, and only one container sustained damage. ET Today reported that an investigation was launched to understand the causes of the accident. Vice President of Keelung Port Song I-ching explained that the barge was transporting a new gantry crane to replace an older one, and that the cause of the collision remained unclear.
\nFollowing the incident, authorities began work to assess the extent of the damage and determine responsibility. It was reported that compensation negotiations would take place between China Container Terminal Corporation and the shipping company involved. The cost of the new gantry crane is estimated at approximately NT$300 million (US$9.3 million).
\nThe collapse was reported to have caused disruptions to ship operations at Pier 20 and the adjacent Pier 21. The crane had been allocated a work window between October 14-18. The Keelung Port Branch of International Ports Corporation confirmed that steps were being taken to resolve the situation and prevent further disruptions to port operations.
