iPort Zealand, developed within the boundaries of Ringsted Municipality in Denmark, will stand at the centre of a massive supply chain transformation that Northern Europe will experience after 2029. Spearheaded by Verdion and envisioning a total investment of €1 billion, the project aims to radically reshape Europe's northern logistics map upon the opening of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link.

Built across a 250-hectare vast area, the project will create 570,000 m² of logistics, manufacturing, and advanced industrial space. One of the most critical elements of iPort Zealand is the intermodal rail terminal that will be housed within the facility. This terminal will have the capacity to handle 750-metre-long freight trains. According to the developer's calculations, when operating at full capacity, the terminal will remove approximately 720 long-distance trucks daily from motorways. This presents a modal shift strategy fully aligned with Denmark's green transition objectives.

Strategic Location: Ringsted Logistics Intersection

Ringsted sits at the exact intersection of Denmark's north–south and east–west rail corridors. Its proximity to the E20 motorway (the main highway connecting Western Europe to Sweden) offers the project unprecedented accessibility from both road and rail perspectives. Verdion CEO Michael Hughes emphasises the importance of the location as follows:

"iPort Zealand is set to become a major new cluster for Danish business in an unparalleled strategic location."

According to Hughes, when the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel opens, new logistics flows will emerge between all Nordic countries and Germany, and the project's commercial potential will grow exponentially.

Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: A New Northern Europe in 2029

When completed, the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will be the world's largest immersed tunnel at 18 km long. Its opening is expected in 2029. Thanks to the tunnel:

  • Hamburg–Copenhagen rail journeys will be 2 hours shorter,

  • Freight trains will be able to bypass the circuitous route over the Great Belt (Storebælt),

  • Trade flows between Denmark and Germany will become significantly faster and more cost-efficient.

This new corridor will strengthen iPort Zealand's function as an intermodal hub, transforming Ringsted into a new logistics "pivot" point for Northern Europe.

Project Components

  • 570,000 m² of logistics, manufacturing, and advanced manufacturing space

  • Intermodal rail terminal with capacity for 12+ trains per day

  • Dedicated facilities for high-tech sectors and pharmaceutical industries

  • Potential to create thousands of new jobs

  • Operational launch planned in parallel with the Fehmarnbelt opening

This planning approach reflects Denmark's objective to have infrastructure ready before the tunnel opens. This way, the increased traffic that will emerge after 2029 can be managed without creating "new capacity bottlenecks".

Potential Impact for Northern Europe

When completed, iPort Zealand is expected to be a mega-hub capable of generating impacts in the following areas:

  1. Rail-first modal shift: Diverting trucks to rail, reducing CO₂ emissions, and alleviating regional motorway congestion.

  2. Germany–Nordic integration: Combined with the Fehmarnbelt link, the Hamburg, Lübeck, Malmö, Copenhagen triangle will transform into a stronger commercial axis.

  3. Supply chain resilience: Creating a hinterland logistics system less dependent on weather conditions and maritime bottlenecks, with higher predictability.

  4. High-tech & pharma clustering: Denmark's industrial clusters focused on biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors can grow further.

In conclusion, iPort Zealand represents not just a logistics centre for Denmark alone, but a next-generation logistics hub for the Nordic–Baltic–Germany corridor. With the opening of Fehmarnbelt, a redesign of Europe's northern distribution networks is expected, and iPort Zealand is poised to be the epicentre of this transformation.

Key Points:

  • iPort Zealand investment size: €1 billion.

  • Location: Ringsted, adjacent to E20, at the intersection of two major rail corridors.

  • Rail terminal at full capacity: can replace approximately 720 trucks daily.

  • Fehmarnbelt Tunnel opening: 2029, Hamburg–Copenhagen rail time –2 hours.

  • 570,000 m² of logistics & manufacturing space, 12+ trains per day capacity.
