South Korea Closes Shipbuilding Labor Gap with Uzbek Workers

South Korea is turning to Uzbekistan, a landlocked nation, to recruit workers and address severe labor shortages in its shipbuilding sector. Under this initiative, approximately 280 Uzbek workers will begin employment this summer at various shipyards around the city of Ulsan. These workers will be paid South Korea's minimum wage of 10,030 won per hour, approximately $7.60.

\n

While foreign workers have previously worked in South Korea's shipbuilding industry, this marks the first time a local government is directly involved in the recruitment process. The city of Ulsan is supporting this initiative by establishing shipbuilding training facilities in Uzbekistan. The success of this pilot program will be evaluated for potential expansion into larger-scale recruitment efforts in the future.

Rising shipbuilding orders in recent years have created a significant labor shortage in South Korea. The national government has responded by increasing annual caps on skilled worker visas and signing training and recruitment agreements with Asian countries. Within this framework, South Korea has also recruited workers from landlocked Nepal, with plans previously announced for up to 3,000 Nepalese workers to work in the country. Additionally, many workers from Southeast Asian nations including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand are coming to work in South Korea.
