Finland Moves 'Eagle S' Tanker Closer to Shore

Finnish police are moving the oil tanker Eagle S, seized on suspicion of damaging submarine cables, to a location closer to shore to deepen the investigation. The vessel, sailing under the Cook Islands flag, is believed responsible for the severing of a 170-kilometer electrical cable connecting Finland and Estonia.

Authorities note that the ship's anchor is missing and may have severed the submarine cables. Additionally, cuts were detected in four data cables. Following these developments, the vessel was moved to Svartbäck, an anchorage point near Kilpilahti Harbor. This new location provides a more suitable environment for the investigation. Operations on the ship were halted during the transfer and resumed after mooring. Police established a security zone one nautical mile around the tanker and declared a flight ban over the Sköldvik Gulf.

Eagle S is known to be part of Russia's "shadow fleet" transporting Russian oil and was fully loaded when seized. According to Lloyd's List, the vessel was equipped with transmitter and receiver devices that could function as a "spy ship" for Russia. The presence of such advanced technology equipment on a commercial vessel is considered unusual.

This incident marks the third similar event in the past year. Last month, a high-speed fiber optic cable connecting Finland and Germany was severed, likely due to external interference. Additionally, a connection between Lithuania and Sweden was damaged, and the Chinese cargo vessel Yi Peng 3 was placed under investigation in connection with these incidents.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated to the Funke media group: "Critical submarine cables in the Baltic Sea are damaged almost monthly. This is an urgent wake-up call for all of us."

These incidents have heightened concerns about infrastructure security in the region and prompted NATO to increase its patrols in the Baltic Sea. The security of energy and data transmission lines between Finland and Estonia is critical to regional stability.
