DeepOcean has secured a new contract for subsea decommissioning operations in oil and gas fields offshore Western Australia. The project will combine Shelf Subsea's regional expertise with DeepOcean's global experience.

Norwegian-based offshore service provider DeepOcean has secured a significant contract for subsea decommissioning of production infrastructure in oil and gas fields offshore Western Australia. This project marks a milestone in strengthening the company's presence in Australia's energy market.

According to company statements, the scope of work includes the safe shutdown and removal of subsea production systems. Specifically:

  • Suspension of subsea tree systems,

  • Removal of flowline, riser and dynamic umbilical lines,

  • Disconnection and recovery of a turret-mooring buoy
    and similar operations.

Project to begin in 2026

Project activities are planned to commence in 2026, with operations to be conducted using a vessel from DeepOcean's regional fleet. Project management and engineering planning will be coordinated from the company's Perth office.

Colin McGinnis, DeepOcean Asia-Pacific General Manager, commented on the project:

"We are honored to have been assigned this important project. This contract strengthens our decommissioning experience in the region and on an international scale, reinforcing our long-term commitment to Australia's energy sector."

The company did not disclose the financial value of the contract. However, it was emphasized that the contract represents one of the first major combined projects in Australia following DeepOcean's acquisition of Shelf Subsea in early 2025.

Strategic impact of the Shelf Subsea merger

With the acquisition of Shelf Subsea, DeepOcean has established a significant position in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East subsea service markets. This merger has enabled the company to increase its regional expertise and infrastructure access, allowing it to combine local operational capabilities with global engineering experience.

McGinnis expressed this synergy as follows:

"DeepOcean is among the market leaders in subsea decommissioning services in the North Sea. By combining Shelf Subsea's local expertise with our global engineering experience, we can provide much stronger and more integrated solutions to our customers in Australia."

Growing decommissioning market in Australia's energy sector

Western Australia has become a region where demand for subsea decommissioning services has grown rapidly as oil and gas fields reach the end of their productive lives in recent years. Operations in this field encompass safe equipment recovery, environmental impact management, and sustainable field rehabilitation processes.

DeepOcean's new project will help regional energy companies safely decommission aging infrastructure in an environmentally responsible manner. This aligns directly with Australia's sustainable energy transition goals.

DeepOcean's global role

DeepOcean is currently a specialized firm operating in the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Asia-Pacific regions, with expertise in subsea construction, maintenance and decommissioning. The company offers cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions for deep-sea operations through advanced ROV systems, subsea robots and specialized vessel fleet.

The Western Australia project reinforces the company's engineering capability in the energy transition process, while being viewed as one of the cornerstones of a long-term growth plan in the Asia-Pacific region.

Key Points:
  • DeepOcean has won a new project for subsea infrastructure decommissioning off Western Australia.

  • Scope of work: Removal of flowline, riser, umbilical and turret-mooring buoy systems.

  • The project will commence in 2026, with management conducted from the Perth office.

  • The Shelf Subsea merger has increased the company's regional capacity and engineering capability.
