Latvia-Sweden Fiber Optic Cable in Baltic Sea Damaged by External Interference

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina stated following an extraordinary government meeting that the damage was likely caused by external factors and was of considerable significance.

Additionally, two other vessels in the area have been brought into the investigation. Latvia is working in coordination with NATO and other countries in the Baltic Sea region to clarify the details of the incident. Prime Minister Silina stated on the X platform that the incident is being investigated together with Swedish allies and NATO.

Swedish Navy spokesperson Jimmie Adamsson stated that the cause of the damage and whether it was intentional have not yet been determined. NATO announced that it will deploy frigates, patrol aircraft, and marine drones to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea and reserved the right to take action against vessels that pose a security threat.

These developments are linked to mounting concerns about energy and communications infrastructure following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Finnish police reported that the Estlink 2 power line between Estonia and Finland and four telecommunications cables were damaged by a tanker whose anchor was dragged along the seabed.

The damaged cable between Latvia and Sweden connects the town of Ventspils to the island of Gotland and is damaged in Sweden's exclusive economic zone. The Latvian Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) stated that communications providers have switched to alternative transmission routes and are attempting to charter a vessel for repairs. It was noted that the exact manner in which the cable was damaged will become clear when repair work begins.
