GPS Signal Jamming Activities Involving Ships in the Baltic Sea
A study conducted by Polish researchers reveals that vessels transiting the Baltic Sea are intentionally disrupting GPS signals. This development poses a serious threat to maritime operations and safety in the region.
Gdynia Maritime University deployed a sensor that detected a total of 84 hours of GPS signal disruptions over a six-month period beginning in June 2024. October saw 29 hours of disruption alone. Some of these outages lasted as long as seven hours, adversely affecting the navigation of vessels operating in narrow waterways.
Researchers noted that these disruptions occurred outside Polish territorial waters and likely originated from vessels transiting international waters. Notably, allegations that the tanker Eagle S severed a submarine cable in December 2024 suggest that such vessels are equipped with GPS jamming equipment.
Finland's Coast Guard has also detected continuous disturbances in satellite navigation signals across the Baltic Sea since April 2024. These disruptions have caused vessels to lose their bearings and drift toward islands or shallow waters. Authorities noted that the disruptions have triggered malfunctions in ships' electronic navigation systems.
Additionally, a Chinese cargo vessel believed to be connected to the rupture of two data cables in the Baltic Sea in November 2024 has been placed under investigation. This incident has heightened concerns about the security of undersea infrastructure in the region.
These developments underscore the need for stricter measures to ensure maritime safety in the Baltic Sea. NATO has decided to deploy two vessels to protect underwater infrastructure in the region. The European Commission has also prepared a plan to protect submarine cables in the Baltic Sea.
