APM Terminals to Build Bangladesh's Deepest Container Terminal in Chittagong
APM Terminals to Build Bangladesh's Deepest Container Terminal in Chittagong
Bangladesh has long faced port congestion, operational inefficiencies, and limited infrastructure that constrain Chittagong's capacity. Although Chittagong Port, the country's main trade gateway, is critical for textile exporters, shallow depths, aging infrastructure, and limited berth capacity frequently result in extended vessel waiting times.
A critical step to relieve these pressures comes with APM Terminals' (APMT) new investment. The company has been selected by the Bangladesh government to build and operate the Laldia Container Terminal under a 30-year concession agreement. The project cost has been announced at $550 million, with the possibility of extending this period based on performance indicators.
The new terminal is targeted to become operational in 2030. Upon completion, it will be Bangladesh's deepest and most modern container terminal to date.
Terminal will break Chittagong's bottleneck
With the Laldia Terminal coming online:
Larger Post-Panamax and next-generation vessels will be able to call at the port,
Vessel waiting times will be substantially reduced,
The country's export capacity will expand,
Supply chain costs will decrease,
The congestion problem that has plagued Chittagong for years will ease.
Since Chittagong Port currently can only operate in areas with 9–10 metre depths, vessels typically face partial loading or must wait offshore. The new terminal will eliminate this problem, making the port stronger in regional competition.
APMT's strategic role
APM Terminals is pursuing a growth-focused strategy particularly in South Asia. The Laldia Terminal will be equipped with:
Advanced automation,
Digitalized operations management,
Efficiency-focused processes
As a result, the terminal will deliver:
Higher berth crane productivity,
Faster vessel discharge/loading,
More reliable scheduling
APMT aims to create a faster and more predictable gateway, particularly for Bangladesh's textile, apparel, leather, agricultural, and pharmaceutical exporters.
Impact on Bangladesh's economy will be significant
Bangladesh handles 90% of its exports by container, with nearly all of it flowing through Chittagong. Consequently, a modern terminal will:
Accelerate integration into global markets,
Lower the country's logistics costs,
Increase foreign direct investment,
Revitalize local employment and the port-area economy.
According to experts, this project is a critical infrastructure step for Bangladesh's 2030 export growth targets.
Key Points:
APMT is constructing a $550 million new terminal in Chittagong.
The Laldia Terminal will be Bangladesh's deepest container terminal.
It holds a 30-year operating concession (with extension option).
Operations are targeted to commence in 2030.
It will enable larger vessels to enter the port.
It will reduce Chittagong's chronic congestion problem.
It will enhance Bangladesh's export competitiveness.
